Frequently Asked Questions

Are Cur-OST® Equine products safe?
In the Cur-OST® research trials conducted at our hospital, we have encountered no negative side effects even at extremely high dosages. We have monitored general health, complete blood chemistry panels as well as cytological parameters in all patients. There have been no negative side effects or alterations in blood panels noted throughout the trial. Based on human research trials, there have been no negative side effects noted in trials up to 3 years in length and at extremely high dosages. Cur-OST® has not been evaluated in pregnant animals or animals that are currently lactating.

How is Cur-OST® supplied?
Cur-OST® Equine products are supplied in a resealable package containing approximately a  28 day supply using a full scoop to the notch inside the rim of the scoop at maintenance levels.  It is designed for once daily administration. In moderate to severe conditions, it is recommended to administer an induction dosage of two scoops once daily for 7-14 days, then decrease to one scoop daily for maintenance.

Are there any interactions with commonly used medications or supplements?
We have not encountered any adverse interactions with any prescription medication or commonly used over the feed supplements. Based on the mode of action of Cur-OST® products, it is currently recommended to use caution when concurrently administering with commonly used anti-inflammatories such as phenylbutazone, Deramaxx®, Previcox®, Rimadyl®, carprofen, flunixen meglumine or Equioxx®.

Do most animals readily accept Cur-OST® products?
Animals are individuals and given this, some are accepting to supplements added to their food source and some are not. Approximately 10% of trial patients were skeptical to the products and resented their flavoring, however this seemed to change over time with an evident increased acceptance. It is to be noted that Cur-OST® has a distinct orange-yellow color to the mixture and can stain the handlers skin surface as well as the muzzle of the horse after ingestion. It is to be noted that Cur-OST® contains curcumin, which has a distinct yellow color, which can stain the hand, muzzles of the animals as well as other surfaces.

Can I compete my horse while using Cur-OST® products?
"Cur-OST® EQ Plus contains green tea, which naturally contains caffeine, which is an illegal substance in most competition venues. If your horse is actively competing and green tea would pose a problem with testing, we would recommend using either Cur-OST® EQ PLUS Green Tea Free formula or the Cur-OST® Green formula, both of which do not contain green tea. Please consult the rule book of your show organization for specifics on illegal substances.

Is Cur-OST® safe to administer to pregnant animals?
Cur-OST® contains curcumin, which has been show in some research studies to potentially induce premature uterine contractions which could result in early delivery or abortion.  At this time we do not recommend its use in animals that might be pregnant.

Companion Animal

How much do I give?
Cur-OST Companion animal product is a powdered supplement and is dosed at 1/2 tsp per 10 lbs., mixed with food and given once to twice daily dependent on the severity of the condition being treated.  There is a ½ tsp scoop in each container.

How long will a container of Cur-OST Companion Animal last?
The typical container will last approximately 30 days for the average 50 lb. dog being administered the supplement once daily.

How does Cur-OST Work?
Cur-OST combines the proven anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin and boswellia alongside many powerful nutritive herbs to help combat pain and inflammation. Curcumin and boswellia have been researched for decades and have been show to exhibit similar properties to many common prescription pain medications, but without the side effects. Our Cur-OST products were developed out of our veterinary hospital to help reduce pain, improve mobility and quality of life for our veterinary patients. By using the Cur-OST products, we have been able to reduce the need for prescription pain medications and therefore reduce unwanted side effects.

How long will a container of Cur-OST Companion Animal last?
Each container will last several months once opened but this is dependent on storage conditions. The herbs contained in the formulas are very susceptible to moist conditions. Once opened, the container should be closed tightly after every use and the dessicant pouch should be maintained and not thrown away. If there is excessive clumping of the product noticed or a change in coloration or odor, please discard and this is an indication that the product has been exposed to excessive moisture or humidity.

What does the Cur-OST Companion animal product taste like?
The Cur-OST Companion Animal product has a light flavoring of peanut butter to improve palatability. The product is generally readily accepted by most dogs, but individuals will vary. Cats are very difficult to please with any supplement despite the flavoring and require more ingenuity in terms of disguising the supplement.

What are some good methods to administer the supplement?
In most cases, we have our clients and customers mix the supplement in with a high quality, organic type of canned food. We encourage the owners to use as little canned food as possible in order to prevent overfeeding and weight gain. Other methods include mixing the product with yogurt, cheese or other food source. Some owners have even used baby foods as a medium.

Is the Cur-OST Companion Animal Supplement safe?
The Cur-OST line of products have been utilized in clinical veterinary practice for over 6 years with no noted side effects other than possible stomach upset. All of our Cur-OST products contain natural ingredients with no known health interactions or side effects. In cases of stomach upset, it is best to restart the product at a lower dosage and gradually increase over 1-2 weeks to allow your pet/horse to adjust.

Are the Cur-OST products safe to use in pregnant animals?
Cur-OST has not been evaluated in pregnant or lactating animals. At this time, we do no recommend the use of any Cur-OST product that contains Curcumin or Boswellia in a pregnant animal.

Are the Cur-OST products safe to use along with other supplements and pain medications?
Cur-OST has been used in our veterinary practice alongside many other nutraceutical supplements without any noted interactions. Caution should be used when using Cur-OST along with other natural or prescription anti-inflammatories as this combination could make your pet or horse more susceptible to stomach upset and even gastric ulcers. In cases of prescription pain medications or NSAID, caution should be used when combining with Cur-OST. In most cases, we have seen the ability to decrease the dosage of the prescription pain medications or NSAIDs, once the pet or horse has been on Cur-OST for a short term. Always follow the advice and recommendations of your veterinarian.

Is there anything else that I could be doing for my pet that is limping or has arthritis?
There are many options to help reduce pain and improve mobility in your pet with arthritis and Cur-OST is just one option. In many of the cases treated at our hospital, we will combine low dose NSAIDs under veterinary supervision for those more severe cases. We will also recommend massage of the affected area along with daily, controlled exercise to improve blood circulation. Warm compresses are occasionally used to help encourage blood flow in more severe cases as well. There are more options in terms of prescription pain medications that can be prescribed by your veterinarian in the more severe cases. Please consult your veterinarian for further information on medications as well as condition diagnosis.
